The Technological Education Institute (T.E.I.) of Piraeus

The Technological Education Institute (T.E.I.) of Piraeus is one of the oldest T.E.I.s in Greece, with a long tradition of involvement in the country’s educational life. It was established under the terms of Law 1404/83 in 1983. As part of its work, the T.E.I. of Piraeus offers both theoretical and practical education to help students use their scientific, technological and artistic knowledge and skills. Courses at each of the T.E.I.’s departments last for eight semesters, which includes a six-month period of Practical Training. Today T.E.I.s are part of the country’s higher education system with specific-and distinctive when compared to Universities-mission. It provides high school graduates with scientific and academic training of immediate application to the economy. A large part of their learning is carried out with the use of Project Based Learning (PBL), supported by Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The students of the Institute have the opportunity to use its lending library, which numbers over 45.000 book titles (220.000 volumes), 160 magazines and dissertations. Furthermore, the digital library (E-library) gives our students the chance to gain access to books, magazines, and bibliographic data as well as to all kinds of digital information and knowledge that is available in libraries of other Educational and Research Institutions (National and International). Practical training helps students relate the theoretical knowledge and laboratory experience that they have acquired during their studies, with the problems faced in production areas. They become familiar with the structure and function of production as well as the factors that affect work conditions and actively influence the process and methods of production. This is achieved through the consant pursuit of the creation of links between the world of Industry and the Academic world. In order to attain strong links with the Business community, the TEI of Piraeus cooperates with a wide range of enterprises aiming at enhancing the students practical skills while, at the same time, investigating the working conditions and employment potential. To this end, the Liaison Office of the Τ.Ε.Ι. of Piraeus was set up as part of the Institute’s efforts to provide support where needed and to reach out to a greater number of contacts, thereby allowing the T.E.I. to become a permanent link between the educational community and the forces of production. All the above are applied to a number of different thematic fields that are covered by the Institute such as Business Studies and Management Science – with a strong focus on language and technology, Engineering Technology, Informatics, Social Sciences and Communication and Information Studies.
